War Service: May 1861 Capt. in 3rd US Cavalry, Wilson's Creek, September 1861 Col. of 2nd Michigan Cavalry, commanded a brigade at New Madrid, March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Island No 10, Corinth, promoted September 1862 Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded the reserve corps at Chickamauga, commanded IV Corps at Chattanooga, Knoxville, commanded XIII Corps in Mobile campaign.

Post War: Army service, commanded Districts of Memphis and New Mexico.
