Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Bde/2nd Divn/III Corps at Chancellorsville (w), Mine Run, commanded 4th Divn/II Corps at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, reverted to brigade command, commanded 3rd Divn/II Corps during the Petersburg campaign, Crater, Appomattox campaign, May 1865 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers.

Post War: Paymaster for a railroad, commander of New Jersey National Guard.
