Died: March 19 1884, Philadelphia PA
Pre-War Profession: West Point 1855, and construction of New
Orleans fortifications, West Point instructor.
War Service: 1861 served in Fort Pickens, chief engineer to Butler's
expedition against New Orleans, acting mayor of New Orleans, August 1862
appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, 1863 commanded 1st Divn/XIX Corps
at Port Hudson, chief engineer of Army of the James at Petersburg, commanded
XVIII then XXV Corps, November 1864 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers,
Fort Fisher, commanded all troops north of the Appomattox River during
final operations of the War.
Post War: Army service in the engineers, constructed ship canal
at the Falls of the Ohio, the great lock at Sault Sainte Marie and the lighthouse
on Stannard's Rock in Lake Superior.
