staffs of McClellan and Pleasonton, distinguished himself at Aldie, June 1863
appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers in command of 2nd Bde/3rd Divn/Cavalry
Corps, Gettysburg, Yellow Tavern, commanded 3rd Cavalry Divn in the
Shenandoah Valley campaign, Fisher's Hill, Five Forks, cut off the ANV's last
escape route at Appomattox, April 1865 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers.
