War Service: 1861 served on McDowell's staff at First Bull Run, served on McClellan' staff, served on Butler's staff, New Orleans expedition, led an expedition to Ponchatoula LA, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded at brigade at Morris Island, Battery Wagner (w), July 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers.

Post War: He was wounded on July 18, 1863, while leading the assault against Fort Wagner on Morris Island, South Carolina, and died of tetanus in New York City.
