Pre-War Profession: Midshipman, resigned 1850, newspaper publisher, lawyer, assistant clerk in US House of Representatives

War Service: October 1861 resigned from Congress, Maj. of 3rd Indiana Cavalry, Lt. Col., Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, March 1863 Col., Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd Cavalry Divn in the Petersburg campaign, July 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn/Cavalry Corps in the Shenandoah Valley.
