War Service: May 1861 recruited 2nd Massachusetts - Col., Shenandoah Valley campaign, June 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/II Corps at Cedar Mountain, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Suffolk campaign, commanded a division in siege of Charleston, served in Arkansas, Florida, Eastern Virginia
