Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Divn/Army of the Ohio at Mill Springs, Shiloh, advance on Corinth, second in command of Army of the Ohio at Perryville, April 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Center Divn/XIV Corps at Stones River, commanded XIV Corps (mightily) at Chickamauga, October 1863 promoted Brig. Gen. in Regular Army, commanded Army of the Cumberland at Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta campaign, Nashville, December 1864 promoted Maj. Gen. in Regular Army.

Post War: Army service, commanded Division of the Pacific.
