Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Center Divn/XIV Corps at Stones River,
commanded XIV Corps (mightily) at Chickamauga, October 1863 promoted
Brig. Gen. in Regular Army, commanded Army of the Cumberland at
Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta campaign, Nashville, December 1864
promoted Maj. Gen. in Regular Army.
