Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1850, engineering duty
(especially surveying), instructor at West Point.
War Service: May 1861 Lt. Col. of 5th New York, Big Bethel, August
1861 Col., Yorktown, commanded 3rd Bde/2nd Divn/V Corps at Gaines's Mill
(w), Second Bull Run, Antietam, September 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of
Volunteers, Fredericksburg, May 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers,
chief engineer of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg (w) where his timely
deployment of Vincent and Weed's brigades saved the day, commanded II
Corps in Mine Run campaign, commanded V Corps in Overland campaign,
relieved by Sheridan at Five Forks.
Post War: Army service in the engineers, writer, and
railroad bridge builder.
