War Service: May 1861 Capt. in 1st Maine, October 1861 Col. of 10th Maine, Cedar Mountain, Antietam (w), 1863 recruited 29th Maine - Col., commanded a brigade in XIX Corps in Red River campaign, served under Sheridan in Shenandoah Valley campaign, commanded a brigade in Winchester and Fisher's Hill, November 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers.

Post War: State adjutant general, state treasurer.
