War Service: April 1861 promoted to Maj. in 8th US Infantry, December 1861 Col. of 4th New Mexico, assisted to repel Sibley's invasion, Lt. Col. of 8th US Infantry, September 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers - not confirmed, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/I Corps at Fredericksburg, April 1863 reappointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/I Corps at Chancellorsville, commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/I Corps at Gettysburg

Post War: He was blinded at Gettysburg and performed some administrative duties, retired February 1865.
