Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn/IX Corps at Fredericksburg, Suffolk campaign, commanded 2nd Divn/VI Corps at Wilderness (w), Petersburg, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Appomattox.

Post War: Army service, mostly in artillery, retired 1883
