War Service: May 1861 Col. of 18th US Infantry as a reward for organising regiments of Ohio militia, served in Western Virginia, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, supervised recruitment activities, suppressed "disloyal" citizens in Indiana and Ohio

Post War: Army service as an Indian fighter, college professor, author, Indian treaty negotiator
