War Service: May 1861 appointed brigade inspector of Ohio state volunteers, served in Western Virginia, August 1861 Col. of 30th Ohio, South Mountain, Antietam, Vicksburg campaign, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 4th Divn/XV Corps at Chattanooga, commanded at Louisville KY, Carolinas campaign.

Post War: US minister to Holland, lawyer, autho
