Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1841,
supervised harbor improvements.
War Service: 1861 captured then released in the abortive attempt
to destroy Norfolk Navy Yard dry docks, chief engineer Heintzelman's
division at First Bull Run and Port Royal expedition, September 1861
appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, led expedition against Florida coast,
June 1862 commanded 1st Divn at Secessionville SC, commanded Department
of the Ohio, July 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers - revoked March
1863, reappointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers March 1863, commanded 1st
Divn/VI Corps at Gettysburg, Rappahannock Bridge, Mine Run, Wilderness
campaign, commanded VI Corps at Spotsylvania after Sedgwick's death,
opposed Jubal Early's Washington raid, Shenandoah campaign, Cedar
Creek, Petersburg, Appomattox.
Post War: Army service in the engineers, Chief Engineer
of the Army, helped to complete the Washington Monument, retired for
age in 1884.
