War Service: August 1861 Col. of 10th Massachusetts, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd Divn/VI Corps at Gettysburg, commanded 4th Bde/2nd Divn/VI Corps at Wilderness, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/VI Corps at Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, September 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, resigned June 1864

Post War: Professor of engineering at Harvard
