War Service: September 1861 Col. of 4th California, acting inspector general of the Army of the Tennessee, March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Divn/Army of West Tennessee in siege of Corinth, acting inspector general of the Army of the Ohio, commanded 3rd Divn/XXIII Corps during Morgan's raid into Ohio, served in administrative capacity for the rest of the War

Post War: Army service in garrison duty.
