Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1838, instructor at West Point, Mexican war, staff officer.

War Service: May 1861 promoted Brig. Gen. of Regular Army, commanded Union forces at First Bull Run, March 1862 appointed Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, defences of Washington, commanded III Corps at Second Bull Run, commanded Dept of the Pacific.

Post War: Army service, commanded Depts in the South and West, retired 1882
