War Service: 1861 aide to Nathaniel Lyon, Wilson's Creek, Lt. Col. of 19th Missouri, Col. of 3rd Missouri, Arkansas Post, Col. of 51st US Colored Infantry, garrison and fortification duty, October 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers - not confirmed by Senate.

Post War: Adjutant general of Missouri, US consul in China, active in the GAR, newspaper editor.
