Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1839 (1st in his class), engineer duty, Mexican war, author, coastal survey duty, governor of Washington Territory, resigned US Army 1853, railroad surveyor, US congressman.

War Service: July 1861 Col. of 79th New York, September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, defenses of Washington, South Carolina expedition, Port Royal, Secessionville, July 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Divn/IX Corps at Second Bull Run, Chantilly (k).

Post War: He was killed in action at the Battle of Chantilly on September 1, 1862, after picking up the fallen regimental colors of his old regiment.
