Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/3rd Divn/III Corps in Peninsula campaign, Second Bull Run, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/III Corps at Fredericksburg, commanded 2nd Divn/I Corps at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, commanded 2nd Divn/V Corps at Wilderness, Spotsylvania (w) - Medal of Honor, commanded military districts in New York.

Post War: Army service, ran Freedmen's Bureau in North Carolina, Departmental command, retired through disability 1869, lieutenant governor of New York.
