instructor at West Point, resigned US Army 1836, civil engineer on railroads.
War Service: July 1861 Col. of 18th Massachusetts, Washington
defences, Peninsula campaign, commanded 1st bde/1st Divn/V Corps,
Antietam, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville, commanded the division at Gettysburg (w), garrison and prison duty.
Post War: US Commission on building the Union Pacific Railroad.
