War Service: May 1861 Col. of 12th Illinois, commanded 1st Bde/C F Smith's
2nd Divn, Fts Henry and Donelson, March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers,
commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn at Shiloh, commanded a division at Iuka and Corinth,
commanded 6th Divn/XVII Corps in Vicksburg campaign, commanded in Vicksburg
after the surrender, protected supply lines in Georgia, resisted Sterling Price's raid into
Missouri, commanded 1st Divn/XVI Corps at Nashville, served in the Army of the Gulf.
Post War: Businessman, public works commissioner, postmaster
