Pre-War Profession: House painter, militia officer, Mexican war.
War Service: April 1861 Col. of 6th Pennsylvania Volunteers, served in the
Shenandoah under Patterson, recruited 48th Pennsylvania - October 1861 Col.,
commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/IX Corps at Groveton, September 1862 appointed
Brig. Gen. of Volunteers - expired March 1863, commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/IX
Corps at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, March 1863 reappointed Brig.
Gen. of Volunteers, served in Kentucky, resigned due to ill health May 1863, organised
militia during Gettysburg campaign and Early's raid, November 1864 mustered out.
Post War: After the war, Nagle resumed civilian life, but was in poor health from his ailing heart and liver.
