Gen. of Volunteers, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, appointment revoked April 1864, reappointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Divn/IV Corps in Atlanta campaign, commanded Dist. of West Florida.

Post War: Army service, chief of engineers, retired 1886, commissioner of public works, railroad president.
