Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1842, Mexican War, engineering and topographical duty.

War Service: May 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Districts in Missouri, commanded Army of the Mississippi, captured New Madrid, Island No 10, March 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, advance on Corinth, July 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. in Regular Army, commanded Army of Virginia at Second Bull Run, commanded Dept. of the Northwest.

Post War: Army service, fought Indians, retired 1886.
