Pre-War Profession: Soldier in Austrian army, revolutionary,
emigrated to US 1859, and journalist.
War Service: 1861 helped 8th New York - Lt. Col., First Bull Run, Col.,
November 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Shenandoah Valley campaign,
commanded 1st Divn/I Corps at Second Bull Run, commanded the cavalry in
Washington defences, March 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded
a division of cavalry under Hunter in Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia, Piedmont
(w) - Medal of Honor, court martial duty, resigned February 1865.
Post War: Consular service in Asia, insurance
company executive.
