Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Divn/III Corps at Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, commanded 2nd Divn/I Corps at Antietam, assigned to the Fitz John Porter court-martial, commanded 3rd Divn/VI Corps in Overland campaign, Monocacy River, Shenandoah campaign (w), August 1864 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers.

Post War: Army service, retired 1867, court martial duty.
