War Service: July 1861 reappointed in the army as a staff paymaster,
supervised construction of Cairo Illinois defenses, February 1862 Col. of 1st
Illinois Light Artillery, Grant's chief of staff at Belmont, Forts Henry and
Donelson, Shiloh, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, in
charge of all railroads supplying Grant's forces during Vicksburg campaign,
chief of staff to Sherman during Atlanta campaign, chief of staff to Thomas.
Post War: Tax assessor, collector of internal revenue.
