appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/McCall's Div/V
Corps on the Peninsula, captured by rebel pickets, exchanged August 1862,
commanded 3rd Div Pennsylvania Reserves/III Corps at Second Bull Run,
commanded militia in Maryland campaign, November 1862 promoted Maj.
Gen. of Volunteers, commanded I Corps at Fredericksburg, commanded
I Corps at Gettysburg.
Post War: Killed by rebel marksman on Cashtown Road while
bringing up the 2nd Wisconsin (lead regiment).
