Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1833, engineer duty, built
coastal fortifications, Mexican war, superintendent of West Point, writer
on engineering and science.
War Service: 1861 Maj. in construction of the defenses of
Washington, Bull Run campaign, September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen.
of Volunteers, chief engineer of Army of the Potomac, conducted the siege
of Yorktown, in charge of Washington defences, chief engineer of Grant's
armies when he came East, commanded siege operations at Petersburg, Appomattox.
Post War: Army service, worked on coastal defenses,
writer and historian, retired 1881.
