Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Bde/4th Divn at Shiloh, commanded 4th Divn/XVI Corps detachment in Vicksburg campaign, relieved of command after the defeat at Jackson (after the fall of Vicksburg), returned to Iowa to await orders.
