TOTTEN, Joseph Gilbert

Died: April 22 1864, District of Columbia

Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1805, resigned 1806, rejoined 1808, engineer duty, Mexican war, commanded the Corps of Engineers, supervised many fortifications and coastal defence works.

War Service: 1861 continued as chief engineer, March 1863 promoted Brig. Gen. in Regular Army

Post War: After his promotion, having served almost six decades in the army. He died the following day of pneumonia in Washington, D.C.
