Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1835, artillery duty, fought the Creeks and Seminoles, quartermaster duty, resigned 1843, businessman, railroad executive.

War Service: 1861 removed a large quantity of arms from the St Louis Armory, 1862 recruited "Chicago Board of Trade Battery" - Capt., Perryville, Stone's River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Lt. Col. in Quartermaster's Dept., Capt. and Asst. Adjutant General, July 1865 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers.
