Pre-War Profession: Enlisted US Army 1842, Mexican war, active in state militia.

War Service: June 1861 Col. of 38th New York, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd Divn at First Bull Run, led his regiment in Peninsula campaign, Groveton, Chantilly, October 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/1st Divn/II Corps at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (w), commanded 1st Bde/3rd Divn/II Corps at Wilderness, Spotsylvania (w), relieved of command May 1864 and mustered out in July 1864.
