instructor at West Point, resigned US Army 1857, college professor
War Service: April 1861 Col. of 10th Indiana, May 1861 appointed
Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded brigade at Cheat Mountain, January
1862 resigned, helped organize Indiana militia, September 1862 appointed
Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers,
commanded 4th Divn/XIV Corps at Chickamauga, October 1862 chief of
Staff in Army of the Cumberland, commanded New Orleans defenses,
commanded Department of Arkansas.
Post War: Army service, duty in Reconstruction, frontier
duty, US senator (briefly), court martialed for conduct in a campaign
against the Sioux, resigned 1877.
