War Service: 1861 enlisted in 45th Illinois, Lt. Col., Fts Henry and Donelson
(w), March 1863 Col., Vicksburg campaign, August 1863 appointed Brig. Gen.
of Volunteers, garrison duty around Vicksburg.
Post War: His horse was hit and a bullet caught him squarely in the right chest at Antietam in 1862 and died the next day.
