War Service: July 1861 Maj. in 6th Iowa, served on Pope's staff, Lt. Col. , March 1863 Col., Corinth, Vicksburg campaign, August 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/4th Divn/XV Corps at Chattanooga (w), Sherman's inspector general in Atlanta campaign, Allatoona Pass (w), commanded 4th Divn/XV Corps in March to the Sea, Carolinas campaign.

Post War: Internal revenue collector, railroad builder, politician, postmaster
