War Service: 1861 mustering duty, Maj. in 1st Missouri, served on Lyon's
staff at Wilson's Creek , Medal of Honor, November 1861 appointed Brig. Gen.
of Volunteers, commanded Union militia in Missouri, commanded the Army of the
Frontier, May 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers (to rank from November 1862)
(earlier promotion not confirmed by Senate), commanded a division in Tennessee,
commanded Dept of the Missouri, commanded XXIII Corps in Atlanta campaign,
opposed Hood's invasion of Tennessee, Franklin, Nashville, November 1864 appointed
Brig. Gen. in Regular Army, Carolinas campaign.
Post War: Army service; commanded First Military District, secretary
of war, superintendent of West Point, commanding General of the Army, retired 1895.
