War Service: July 1861 Col.. of 1st Nebraska, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn at Ft Donelson, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd Divn at Shiloh, October 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers - expired, March 1863 reappointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Divn/XV Corps in Vicksburg campaign, commanded Dist. of the Frontier, served in Arkansas.

Post War: US senator, governor of Wyoming Territory, governor of Nebraska.
