Pre-War Profession: Mexican war, and newspaperman.
War Service: August 1861 Lt. Col. in 1st California, participated in
recapture of Arizona and New Mexico, June 1862 Col., October 1862 appointed
Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, led Apache nation expedition, commanded District of
Arizona, commanded 2nd Divn/VII Corps during Red River campaign, commanded
cavalry in Department of the Gulf at New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Post War: Deputy US marshal in New Orleans, customs auditor,
US senator, member board of commissioners of District of Columbia.
