War Service: 1861 organised volunteers in Pittsburgh, Brig. Gen. of Pennsylvania Volunteers under Patterson in the Shenandoah, October 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, served in Kentucky, November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Divn/XIV Corps at Stone's River, Chickamauga, relieved of command but cleared in a court martial, served on boards, resigned January 1865

Post War: US congressman, railroad president.
