War Service: March 1861 1st Lt. in 9th US Infantry, instructional duty,
Capt., staff duties in Peninsula, Seven Days and Antietam campaigns, staff duty
with Gen. Sheridan in the West, Chickamauga, chief of staff to Sheridan,
Shenandoah Valley campaign, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, Five
Forks, Col. in Regular Army, May 1865 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers
Post War: Army service (mostly in cavalry), commanded the troops
in the massacre at Wounded Knee, commanded Dept. of California, retired 1897.
