Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1836, Seminole war, frontier duty, Mexican War, resigned 1859.

War Service: May 1861 Col. of 1st Vermont, May 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Ship Is. expedition, commanded 1st Bde in New Orleans expedition, recruited Negro troops but resigned in August 1862 when they were put to work instead of given military duty.
