March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd
Divn/I Corps in defences of Washington, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/III
Corps at Second Bull Run, Chantilly, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/I Corps
at South Mountain, Antietam, provost marshal of the Army of the Potomac
and later all armies operating against Richmond, commanded Dist. of Henrico.
