War Service: July 1861 Col. of 72nd New York, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn/III Corps in Peninsula campaign, commanded 2nd (Excelsior) Bde/2nd Divn/III Corps at Second Bull Run, September 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Divn/I Corps at Fredericksburg, resigned January 1863.
