New Mexico, Massachusetts and Florida, resigned 1857, lawyer.
War Service: May 1861 Col. of 1st Michigan, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd
Divn at First Bull Run (w,c) - Medal of Honor, released August 1862 and
appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers (from June 1861), commanded 1st Divn/IX
Corps at Antietam, commanded IX Corps at Fredericksburg, served in Kentucky,
commanded 3rd Divn/IX Corps at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, commanded
1st Divn/IX Corps at Petersburg.
Post War: Lawyer, Army service from 1866, commanded
Dept. of Arizona, Apache wars, retired 1887, governor of Washington's
Soldiers' Home
