War Service: August 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Dept. of the Ohio, directed raids in Alabama, November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, had disputes with Buell, sent to command the Dept. of the South

Post War: In September 1862, he assumed command of X Corps and the Department of the South at Hilton Head, South Carolina, but died in Beaufort of yellow fever shortly after assuming his post.
