Pre-War Profession: Teacher, graduated West Point 1849
(1st in class), engineer service, instructor at West Point.
War Service: August 1861 chief engineer in Port Royal expedition, devised
the scheme to capture Ft Pulaski, April 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers,
served in Kentucky, July 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded
Dept of the South and X Corps, recaptured Ft Sumter, served in Army of the
James, defended Washington in Early's raid (injured in a fall from his horse),
commanded Dept of the South.
