War Service: May 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, defences of Washington, commanded 1st Divn/III Corps at Groveton, served on Fitz John Porter's court martial, resigned due to ill health October 1863

Post War: US minister to Papal States, helped secure arrest of John Surratt, deputy customs collector
